The Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, is the leading financier of higher education in Kenya. It is a State Corporation under the then Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. The mandate of the Board is to disburse loans, bursaries and scholarship to students pursuing higher education in recognized institution. Key among the responsibilities of the Board is sourcing funds, establishing, managing and awarding loans bursaries and scholarships to Kenyans pursuing higher education in recognized institutions.

Application forms first time applicants
These loans are for students joining public or private universities within the East African Community directly from high school either through the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) or as self-sponsored. Amounts awarded range between 35,000 minimum and 60,000 maximum based on the level of need.
The loan attracts interest of 4% p.a and the students are required to repay their loans on completion of their studies. Students are advised to apply at least one month before the opening date to allow ample time for processing and remittance. Application forms can be obtained from helb website.

The application period is January through July every year.

Loan repayment
Undergraduate Loan repayment starts within one year of completion of studies or within such a period as the Board decides to recall the loan whichever is earlier. However, you can make voluntary payments before or after you leave your course which will reduce your balance earlier.
Upon completion of loan repayment, kindly seek clearance from HELB. Please note that only HELB and not your employer can confirm your loan repayment status. HELB shall confirm loan repayment completion by issuing certificate of clearance. For clearance, please fill in the Loan Recovery Enquiry form and e-mail to: certificate@helb.co.ke (please quote your ID number).
Over Repayment
If you overpay your loan, you will receive a refund from HELB and not your employer. To claim refund, please fill in the Loan Recovery Enquiry form and e-mail to: refund@helb.co.ke
Alternative Loans (Post-Graduate, Continuing Education, Civil Servants Training Revolving Fund (TRF) and FUNZO). Alternative loans are due for repayment immediately upon disbursement.

-Click “Register” to register your credentials (First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, *ID Number,Valid Email Address,Password) and Click “Sign Up”
-An *Activation Linkis immediately sent to your personal email address.
Login to your personal email address to access the HELB Portal *activation link
and click on it.
Login to the HELB Portal from the activation link
Update Personal and Residence Details and Click
“Save”
