Garissa high school is a National school in Garissa county and it opened its door in 1969. The school started through a harambee initiative as a single stream and was later taken over by the government. The school updated to a double stream in 1986 and triple stream in 1990.
With the impact of free primary education that was established in 2003 and free secondary in 2008, Garissa high expanded to fourth stream in 2009 and fifth stream in 2010. The school admitted the first A level in 1978 and was the only school offering art subjects.
