Upper Hill School is a public boys’ boarding secondary school in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. Its history is closely linked to the development of schools for different communities during Kenya’s colonial era and the transformation of those institutions after independence.
Origins as Delamere School
Historical research traces the school’s origins to 1956, when it was known as Delamere High School. It initially educated European boys and girls who were not admitted to other colonial-era secondary schools. The boys’ school separated from the girls’ institution around 1958–1959, while the girls’ school evolved into State House Girls High School.
From Simba Secondary to Upper Hill
In 1969 the institution adopted the name Simba Secondary School, reflecting changes in Kenyan education after independence. It later became Upper Hill School, taking its name from its locality. A Tangaza University research paper documents the earlier name changes.
Boarding and school life
After initially operating as a day school, Upper Hill began a transition to full boarding in 1997, completing it around 2004. It has developed a strong profile in academics, sport and student development. Recent listings describe it as a public extra-county boys’ senior school; confirm Grade 10 pathways through the official placement service.
Admissions and fees
Families should obtain an official joining letter, confirm the reporting date, subject combinations, dormitory arrangements, medical forms and uniform requirements. Request the current approved school fee structure and payment channels rather than relying on undated figures.
KCSE results and co-curricular opportunities
Academic results vary by examination year. Request authenticated KCSE results for particular years. Ask the school about sports, clubs, leadership opportunities and learning facilities when evaluating a placement.
