James Wainaina Macharia is a Kenyan accountant. In August 2018, James Macharia was nominated by Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, as Cabinet Secretary for transport. In addition, Macharia is the former Cabinet Secretary of Health.
James Macharia was born on 1959 inKigumo, Murang’a County.
Macharia was the top student in class for both of his O-levels and A-Levels. Earned his A-level education from Kagumo High School in Nyeri. Macharia attained a Bachelor of Commerce at University of Nairobi. Macharia was selected by Deloitte & Touche to train as a Chartered Accountant in London, UK, on merit in 1983. Macharia is also a qualified CPA(K). He also earned an MBA Degree from Henley Management College, in United Kingdom. Then, Macharia joined the Standard Chartered Bank in 1989, rising to become the Financial Controller in 1994. Macharia worked in Zambia, thereafter, as Managing Director, African Banking Corporation. He was later transferred to Tanzania in the same position.
From 2005 to 2015, James Macharia was been Group Managing Director with NIC Bank, when the Bank grew more than ten fold and with five subsidiary companies including Tanzania and Uganda. James has gained significant levels of achievement in each of the above roles, leading to his current position of Cabinet Secretary.
Macharia got married to a Zambian lady, Pamela Chanda and the two have been blessed with two children, Martin and Sandra.

From 1989 to 1994, he worked as Financial Controller of Standard Chartered bank. He was Group Managing Director of NIC Bank and Managing Director of African Banking Corporation, Zambia and Tanzania. Later was employed at Deloitte & Touche as Accountant,CPA (K). From May 2013 to January 2018 was working as Cabinet Secretary for Health and since January 2018, as Cabinet Secretary in the ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
