Kivutha Kibwana is a Kenyan politician and also human rights activist. Kibwana was a Minister for Defence, Minister for Environment and a former MP for the Makueni Constituency. He was also President Mwai Kibaki’s former advisor.

Age

Kivutha was born on 1954 in Mwanyani, Makueni County.

Education

He attended Nduundune Primary School and later joined Machakos School for his primary and secondary education, respectively. Kivutha got a Bachelor degree in Law from the University of Nairobi in 1976 and a Masters of Law. Kibwana also went to the University of London and George Washington University for further study. In June, 1984, he graduated from Harvard University.

He got married to Nazi Kivutha who is a Counseling Psychologist by profession and the Patron of the KCPA (Kenya Counsellors and Psychologists Association). Besides her roles as the first lady of Makueni County, she is also well known for her work through a Non Governmental Organization known as the Shina Foundation which was founded in 2013 by her.

Shina Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that focuses on three main areas according to the organization’s website and these include health, education and empowerment.

Political Career

Kibwana was the National Convention Executive Council’s spokesperson from 1997 to 2002. He also served as the Associate Professor in the University of Nairobi from 1977 to 2002, Dean of the Faculty of Law, a senior lecturer and chairman of the Department of private law.

In 2002, Kibwana became the MP for Makueni Constituency and Minister of both Land and Settlements and Environment and Natural Resources. He was appointed as Presidential Advisor for Constitutional, Parliamentary & Youth Affairs in the President Office from January, 2008 to September, 2012.
