Ngara Girls High School is a public girls’ boarding secondary school in Ngara, Nairobi County. Established in 1957, it has a long educational history spanning the final years of colonial rule and independent Kenya.
Founding and historical development
The school opened in January 1957 as a mixed secondary institution serving mainly Indian-Kenyan pupils from Ngara and Parklands. In 1962 its boys transferred to what became Highway Secondary School in Nairobi South B. It subsequently became a girls’ institution and, after Kenya’s independence, opened its doors to pupils of all ethnic backgrounds. Boarding accommodation expanded over time.
Mission and motto
The traditional motto is Honore Et Labore, meaning Honour and Effort. The school’s mission emphasises well-rounded academic, moral, spiritual and personal development.
