NSSF Kenya membership allows eligible workers to build social security savings for retirement and other qualifying benefits. Both employed and voluntary members can register, but their contribution arrangements are different.
Employed members
Employers register eligible employees with NSSF and deduct employee contributions alongside the employer’s matching share. Employees should check their NSSF number, payslips and contribution statements for accuracy.
Self-employed and voluntary members
Eligible self-employed workers can register voluntarily and make their own contributions. Check current voluntary contribution terms rather than relying on an old fixed amount.
Register online
- Open NSSF self-service.
- Select the Member Self Service registration option.
- Enter correct identity and contact details.
- Print or save the application notification.
- Complete identity certification at an NSSF office if required.
The official NSSF FAQs explain pre-registration, activation, certification and recovering credentials.
What documents are needed?
Bring valid identification and any required employer or other supporting information. Ask your branch for the latest list of documents specific to your category.
Contributions and payment
Employees contribute according to the applicable current NSSF schedule. Voluntary members can follow NSSF’s official M-PESA instructions and verify account details before authorising payment. Employers should use their designated returns and remittance channels.
Statements and benefits
Members can request statements and information on retirement and other qualifying benefits. Eligibility, timing and documents depend on the relevant law and NSSF rules. Confirm with NSSF before making decisions based on a projected payout.
