Robert Alai grew up in Ahero Nyanza. His father, Samson Onyango Alai, had three wives and 25 children. He is the fifth born in a family of nine from him mother. Unfortunately his mum died when he was in Class Four.
He moved to Nairobi to join the college after finishing high school. He joined Kenyatta University to take the Africa Virtual University programme that was sponsored by World Bank. He studied System Analysis and Design at Kenya School of Monetary Studies.
In 2001, Robert Alai got his first job as an IT trainee at Telkom Kenya. He camped outside the PS’s office for four months before he got the job. However his internship ended in December 2002. He later got a job at a cyber cafe, although the money was too little. He said the life was hard, that he used to stay in Majengo in Calif with other five friends in a two-bedroom house. One of his roommates told him about a job opportunity in Kigoma, Tanzania in 2003. He went there where he worked for only eight months and secured a job with UN. He worked with UN in Congo in the logistics department, but the office was located in Tanzania.
