Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka is a Kenyan politician. Kalonzo Musyoka was the tenth Vice-President of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. Kalonzo Musyoka served in the government under President Daniel arap Moi and was Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1998 and under President Mwai Kibaki, as Minister of Foreign Affairs too from 2003 to 2004, then also from 2004 to 2005 as a Minister of the Environment. Kalonzo was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2007 presidential election, after which he was appointed as Vice-President by President Mwai Kibaki in January, 2008.

Kalonzo Musyoka is the party leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement. Kalonzo also serves as Chief Commissioner for The Kenya Scouts Association.

Stephen Musyoka was born on 24th December 1953, Tseikuru, Kitui District in Kenya’s Eastern Province.

Education

Kalonzo Musyoka attended Tseikuru Full Primary School for his primary education. He then went to Kitui High School for his secondary education and eventually to Meru School from where he graduated in the advanced level in the year 1973. In 1977, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University of Nairobi. Kalonzo Musyoka continued with his studies at the Kenya School of Law in 1978 where he was awarded a Post graduate diploma in Law. He attended the Mediterranean Institute of Management in Cyprus in 1979 where he got a post graduate Diploma in Business.

Kalonzo was awarded an honorary doctorate in divinity among other 17 beneficiaries in 2009, at the Charter hall in Nairobi. This was the ‘honorary professorships and doctorate degrees’ which were issued by Professor Clyde Rivers, the International Commissioner of the Latin University of Theology, from Inglewood, California. Kalonzo was honoured with a Doctorate in Humane Letters on 19th December, 2008, in recognition of his achievements in peace making, conflict resolution efforts, sustainable community development and humanistic ideals by Kenyatta University during 25th graduation. Kalonzo was named African Dignitary Man of the year 2016.

Marriage

Kalonzo got married to Pauline and the two have four children. Kalonzo was baptised by Pastor Masila Munyoki. Musyoka is the patron of the Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation and has served since 2006.

Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka Political Career

In 1985, Kalonzo Musyoka won the Kitui North By-elections and was appointed as an Assistant Minister for Works, Housing and Physical Planning. In 1988, he was re-elected as an MP and elected Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Organizing Secretary of KANU and KANU National Executive Committee’s member. Kalonzo was re-elected MP and appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in 1992.

Kalonzo was re-elected in 1997 and appointed Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Minister for Tourism and Information, Elected National Vice-Chairman of KANU. In 2002, he was again re-elected MP and appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs. Kalonzo Musyoka has traveled extensively as Head and Member of Government Delegations to various countries to address the UN General Assembly from 1993-1998, chaired and spearheaded peace initiatives within the framework of IGAD (Inter-Governmental Authority for Development) peace processes for Sudan and Somalia, and in the Great Lakes Region.

He had to remark, after his tirelessly working for IGAD initiatives and after witnessing the final conclusion, that he was keenly aware that each time, a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice; he sends forth a ripple of hope to those involved. This commitment inspires his contribution to the cause of peace in Sudan , Somalia and the Great Lakes region as a whole. He, therefore, pledge his continued engagement in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region. He was dearly humbled by the Somali peaceful election and the peace at large.
