Yusuf Hassan Abdi is a Kenyan politician, diplomat, social activist, former journalist and a former top Director of IRIN. He joined the Kenya parliament as a legislator in 2011, after working many years with the United Nations.

Yusuf was born on March 9th, 1953, in Nairobi to an ethnic Somali family.

Education

He attended Garissa Primary School in Garissa and later moved to Nairobi’s Aga Khan Primary School. Yusuf joined Taranganya Secondary School in Kuria and he was expelled from the institution, when was in form three, for having reportedly spearheaded a strike. He holds a Diploma of Higher Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Humanities from the University of Middlesex, in London. He also obtained a Master of Arts degree (MA) in international relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at the Tufts University in Medford in Massachusetts.

Yusuf got married to Susannah Price, an English woman and the two have been blessed with five children.

Career

In June 1974, Yusuf Hassan got a job as an Announcer/Producer at the Voice of Kenya in Nairobi and then in January 1978, he moved to Arab Times in Kuwait City as a Reporter. Then in February 1979, went to BBC External Service in London in UK as a Producer. In March 1984, he got another job at Africa Events in London in UK as a Co-founder/Senior Editor. From September 1989 to November 1990, BBC World Service in London in UK employed him as an Acting Head of Service. In December 1990, he went to The Namibia Broadcasting Corporation in Windhoek in Namibia and worked as a Director/Senior Controller. In September 1992, joined the Voice of America in Washington D.C. in USA and worked as a Senior Editor. Between January 1994 and September 1999, he was employed at Senior External Media Relations and Public Information as an Officer for Southern SADC Region.

From September 1999 to October 2001, he worked as a Senior Spokesperson at South West and Central Asia Region and in November 2001, was part of UN Kabul in Afghanistan as a Senior Spokesman. In November 2005, went to IRIN-OCHA in Dubai in UAE and Nairobi in Kenya as a Deputy Coordinator/Director. In January 2008, joined the United Nations in New York as a Senior Officer. Since 2008 until 2011, he was employed at UNHCR as a Senior Global Communication Advisor. In 2011, Yusuf Hassan joined the Kenya National Assembly as a Member of Parliament for Kamukunji Constituency.
