Paul Ongili Owino who is commonly known as Babu Owino is a Kenyan politician and currently member of parliament of Embakasi East constituency. Owino is the former chairman of Students Organisation of Nairobi University where he left a legacy as being among the most famous people in the school.

Babu was born in a city slum of Kondele in Kisumu where his mother was a chang’aa seller. In 2002, he attended Kisumu Township for his primary education where he scored 394/500 marks in KCPE and got a letter from Mang’u high school after he passed his primary school education well but his mother could not afford the school fees and a sponsor chipped in but took him to Kisumu High School where he ended up getting an A- of 80 points in 2006’s KCSE. Babu then secured a space at Moi University but he did not join instead he went and worked at his uncle’s farm and later on joined the University of Nairobi via parallel program to pursue Actuarial Science since he loves maths so much. He went back and studied law in the same university after his first degree in Actuarial Science. It is said that Owino currently has three degrees, two PhDs and 7 diplomas.

Career

His political journey began when he became the Student Organization of Nairobi University’s student leader from 2010 to 2015. Owino vied for the Westlands constituency seat but he lost to Timothy Wanyonyi in 2013. Babu Owino later vied for the Member of Parliament seat of Embakasi East constituency and he bagged it. He is now Embakasi East constituency’s MP elect and stands as one of the most influential political leaders in the country.

As a Member of Parliament in Kenya earn a monthly basic taxable salary of Kshs. 532,500 and other allowances, meaning each member get an average minimum gross salary of Ksh1,378,000. Apart from their salaries, Members of Parliament are entitled to a mortgage loan, car loan and medical cover facility. It is noteworthy that the mortgage and car facilities are loan facilities that are granted to Members of Parliament on interest and payable within five years being their term of office.
