Equity Bank Accounts in Kenya: Types, Requirements and Savings Options

Equity Bank accounts in Kenya cater for daily transactions, savings, education needs, family banking and investments. A suitable account depends on who will use it, how frequently money needs to be accessed and the current fees and restrictions. This page was originally published in 2016 and its account terms and tariff amounts must be checked against Equity’s latest official product pages.

Where to find current Equity Bank account details

1. Ordinary accounts and everyday banking

An ordinary personal account may be used to receive income, transfer money, pay bills and withdraw funds using supported bank channels. Confirm the minimum opening deposit, account-maintenance and transaction fees, card availability and permitted account holders. The statement in a 2016 prospectus that all ordinary accounts have no ledger or maintenance charges is not necessarily valid for every customer or current account variant.

2. Current accounts for individuals and businesses

Current accounts may suit customers who need high transaction volumes, business deposits, standing orders and sometimes cheque-book services. Business or joint accounts can require additional registration documents, authorised signatories and know-your-customer checks. The older KSh 5,000 opening balance and cheque-leaf fee are historic examples, not a current quotation.

3. Jijenge Account: regular goal-based savings

Equity’s current Jijenge Account page still advertises an account opening balance of KSh 300, minimum monthly savings of KSh 300, and a minimum six-month savings period without partial withdrawals. The bank describes no monthly charges and access to credit facilities subject to the product’s conditions and lender approval. Check the latest tariff, interest policy, early withdrawal restrictions and terms before opening.

4. Junior Member and Teen Member accounts

Equity continues to list Junior Member and Teen Member savings accounts for younger customers. A parent or guardian may be required to provide their own original identification and the child’s birth certificate or other relevant records. Check the age limits, who can operate the account, permitted withdrawals and the account’s terms when the child reaches adulthood.

5. Achievers Student and School Fees accounts

The bank’s current savings catalogue also lists an Achievers Student Account and a School Fees Account. A student may need proof of current study, while school-fees savings help families set funds aside for education. Confirm whether account fees, interest, withdrawal limits and educational benefits match your needs; the 2016 KSh 100 school-fees balance and student benefits are not automatically current.

6. EazzySave, call deposits and fixed deposits

Equity advertises EazzySave as an additional savings choice and offers call or fixed deposits for customers setting money aside for investment. Fixed-deposit terms, minimum amounts, interest calculations and early withdrawal conditions differ by product and contract. Never assume the 2016 KSh 20,000 minimum or early borrowing percentage applies to a new deposit.

Account types compared

  • Daily transactions: ordinary or relevant current account; assess transfer and withdrawal charges.

  • Education: Achievers Student or School Fees; check proof-of-school requirements.
  • Term savings: call or fixed deposit; compare duration, interest and early exit terms.

  • Activate supported banking services safely and retain the account-opening documents.

Current customer contacts and security

Equity’s official website publishes the customer care hotline +254 763 000 000 and email info@equitybank.co.ke. Confirm further contact details through its official site, never through a message requesting your PIN or a one-time password. Do not send an opening deposit or sensitive documents to an individual posing as a bank agent.
