Equity Bank Kenya accounts support everyday transactions, savings, business payments and other financial goals. The 2016 version of this article listed ordinary, current, Jijenge, Junior Member, Teen Member, Achievers Student, School Fees, and Call and Fixed Deposit accounts with fixed opening balances and fees. This revision explains their purposes while making clear that product names, availability and charges must be checked against the bank’s current tariff and account terms.

1. Ordinary or everyday transaction accounts
An ordinary personal account is intended for receiving money, paying bills, making transfers and managing day-to-day expenses. Customers should compare debit-card availability, monthly and transaction charges, cash withdrawal rules and mobile-banking support. The former article’s statement that every ordinary account has no minimum balance or maintenance fee cannot be assumed for all current products.
2. Current accounts
A current account may be appropriate for individuals, partnerships or businesses making frequent payments and transfers. Features can include cheque services, account statements, standing orders and selected foreign-currency options. Requirements and minimum opening deposits vary by product and customer type. The old 2016 KSh 5,000 opening amount and KSh 17.50-per-cheque-leaf quote should be treated as historical.
3. Savings and goal-based accounts
Savings products help customers build money for future needs. A goal-based or recurring savings arrangement may encourage regular deposits and restrict withdrawals to support a target. The former Jijenge account was advertised as a disciplined savings product, but its original KSh 300 deposit rule and borrowing percentages are not verified current terms. Check today’s products, withdrawal restrictions, deposit protection and interest conditions.
4. Children’s and teenagers’ accounts
The 2016 Junior Member and Teen Member accounts were marketed for families saving for children and teenagers. Today, the relevant account normally requires parent or guardian identification, evidence of the child’s identity and any required authority to operate it. Ask Equity which children’s account is available now and whether there are withdrawal, minimum-deposit or age-transition conditions.
5. Student and education savings accounts
The historical Achievers Student Account was aimed at college students and the School Fees Account at customers saving for education expenses. These products may have been renamed or changed. Students may need an admission letter or valid student ID alongside identification. Parents should compare charges and accessibility of current education-saving products rather than relying on the original KSh 100 school-fee account opening amount.
6. Call and fixed deposit accounts
A fixed deposit generally places funds with a bank for an agreed term at a disclosed rate, subject to early-withdrawal rules. A call deposit may offer a different notice or access arrangement. Equity’s current product documents determine minimum sums, maturity instructions and whether rates are fixed or negotiable. The former KSh 20,000 minimum and claims about instant borrowing against deposits were published in 2016 and must not be treated as current guarantees.
How to open an Equity Bank account
- Choose an account type based on whether you need everyday transactions, business banking or longer-term savings.
- Consult the bank’s official current account guide and tariff before choosing.
- Prepare the required ID or passport, KRA PIN, contact details and other KYC information requested by the bank.
- For a joint or business account, provide the additional ownership, registration and signatory documents required.
- Open through an authorised bank branch or supported official digital account-opening process.
- Review the fees, interest conditions, withdrawal rules and account terms before making a deposit.
- Activate secure mobile or online banking if available, and keep your credentials private.
Fees, interest and deposit protection
Opening balances, interest, charges and features can change. Some accounts earn interest; others are primarily transaction services. Obtain the current tariff guide and product terms and consider how accessible the money needs to be. Never send account-opening fees to an unofficial intermediary or use account numbers from an old directory.
Equity Bank support
