Gideon Moi is a Kenyan politician who is the current Senator for Baringo County since 2013. Moi was elected with a landslide win of over eighty percent (80%), trouncing his opponent Jackson Kosgei. Gideon is also the Kenya African National Union’s chairman, KANU, that for decades was the ruling party in Kenya. Gideon is the youngest son of Daniel arap Moi, second president of Kenya, and Lena Moi, his mother. Phillip Moi, Jonathan Moi , John Mark Moi, Raymond Moi (MP for Rongai), Jennifer Jemutai Kositany, Doris Moi, June Moi are Gideon’s siblings.

Gideon has played polo for the Gilgil based Manyatta club. He has managed to keep his personal life private, uniquely for Kenyan politicians. In February, 2020, Gideon Lost his father, Daniel Arap Moi, the former President of Kenya. In 2004, July, he lost his mum, Lena Moi.

Political Career

He is the leader of KANU political party, which was his father’s political party. He is a favoured son of former president of Kenya, Gideon has been groomed as a presidential candidate by his father. He rallied KANU to support Uhuru Kenyatta for a second term in 2017 general elections, despite his unease for the candidature which also included his political nemesis and fellow tribesman, William Ruto, deputy president.

He has announced his intentions and is expected to run in the 2022 Kenyan presidential elections and this will test his political abilities and his ability to fundraise, either from his wealth or from his supporters. Even though Moi is not now seen as popular as Ruto, it’s worth noting there is no national audience poll with him head to head with William Ruto. Gideon has continued to serve as a senator and Chairman of the Senate ICT Committee instead of the Cabinet Secretary in government of Uhuru Kenyatta, which was speculated in January 2018.
