He attended Chuka High School before proceeding to Alliance High School for his secondary education. Kiraitu graduated with a Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi in 1977 and got a Master of Law in the same university in 1982. Kiraitu attained another Master in Law from Harvard Law School when Kiraitu resided two years in exile in the US during Daniel arap Moi’s one party dictatorship.

Career

Kiraitu was a partner in a law firm he founded together with Kamau Kuria and Aaron Ringera, where he practised law for over ten years. Kiraitu’s biggest case during this period was representing political prisoners of the Daniel Moi government including Wanyiri Kihoro against the government. The case that’s covered in the book of Wanyiri Kihoro ‘Never Say Die,’ The Chronicle of a Political Prisoner and resulted in the detention of Kuria Kihoro in an attempt to cause the abandonment of the case and a period in exile in various western countries for both Kiraitu and Kuria Kihoro. He joined the struggle for multi-party democracy in 1990 as among the Kenya’s ‘Young Turks’ upon Kiraitu’s return from exile. Following Kenya’s return to multi-party politics in 1991, he joined the newly formed FORD (Forum for the Restoration of Democracy) where he was elected to parliament on the FORD ticket during the first multi-party election in 1992, as MP for parliament for South Imenti Constituency, Meru County.

He later joined Democratic Party (DP) when FORD splintered in the aftermath of the demise of its leader, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, retaining the South Imenti seat in 1997. He served as the shadow Attorney-General and member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Anti-Corruption, as an opposition member of parliament from 1991 to 2002. Since 1992, he has been a member of parliament and has formerly served as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs as well as the shadow Attorney General. In 2002, he won the South Imenti Constituency MP seat under NARC (National Rainbow Coalition) party. Kiraitu was appointed Minister of Energy after the Government’s defeat in 2005 constitutional referendum. Then he was re-elected as an MP under PNU (Party of National Unity) ticket in the 2007 elections.

Murungi was elected the governor for Meru County under a Jubilee ticket, defeating the Incumbent Peter Munya an effectively becoming the second governor of the Meru County since its inception, on 8 August, 2017 general election. He served as the Senator for Meru County, prior to being the governor, after winning the seat under the APK (Alliance Party of Kenya) ticket in the 2013 elections.
