Mutahi Kagwe is currently the Cabinet Secretary for Health in the Republic of Kenya. In February 28th, 2020, Kagwe took his oath of office. Kagwe is a tenured Kenyan politician who served as the first Senator of Nyeri County.

From 1965 to 1971, he attended Kihate Primary School and later joined Kagumo High School from 1972 to 1977. Mutahi holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Insurance degree from the University of Nairobi acquired in 1981 and an Master in Business Administration from the United States International University (USIU), 1992. Kagwe served as the fifth Member of Parliament for Mukurweini Constituency, Nyeri, from 2002 to 2007. He was the Chair of Parliamentary Committee on Finance, Trade, Tourism and Planning while still a Member of Parliament, before his appointment as a Cabinet Minister for Information and Communications. In March, 2020, Mutahi led Kenya to fight the war against coronavirus during the worldwide outbreak of Covid-19.

He spearheaded the construction of the transformational East African Marine System which’s the first Fibre Optic Project for Eastern Africa as Cabinet Minister. Kenya launched ‘Mpesa’ the world’s first-ever money transfer system, during his term as Cabinet Minister. Mutahi’s credits, as Senator, include the championing of ‘The Best Classroom,’ an Early Childhood Education program that aspires to promote the quality provision of ECDE countrycountry-wide and also credited with having sponsored the Cyber Security and Protection Bill in the Senate of Kenya.

Kagwe has many professional memberships such as the Kenya Institute of Management, the Marketing Society of Kenya, the parliamentarian network of the World Bank and the commonwealth parliamentary association. Apart from politics, Mutahi has held and continues to hold many positions such as Chairman of several corporate boards. Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Mutahi is also the former Multimedia University Council Chairman.

Mutahi was commended with The Elder of the Golden Heart by the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, in recognition of his distinguished service to the nation.

Political Career

From 2002 to 2007, be became a fifth Member of Parliament for Mukurweini Constituency, Nyeri county. Kagwe was also the chair of Parliamentary Committee on finance, planning, tourism and trade. He was later appointed to serve as the Minister for Information and Communications. From 2013 to 2017, Kagwe became the first Senator of Nyeri County under the Jubilee political party. He did several notable works such as the first Fibre Optic Project for East Africa while serving as a cabinet minister.

Mutahi Kagwe launched M-Pesa, which’s the world’s first-ever money transfer and also launched Best Classroom championing. In February 28th, 2020, he took an oat of office to serve as Kenyan Health Cabinet Secretary during the time of the corona pandemic.

The government was doing all they could within their best abilities to see that the spread is controlled. The government has placed a ban on social gatherings like clubbing and the people are advised to practice social distancing and maintain proper hygiene. Kenyans are also advised to reduce the number of people that board public transportation. Those who in one way or the other came in close contact with those already infected are also monitored or put in quarantines for 14 days.
