NHIF Rates in Kenya: Understanding Current SHA Contributions

People searching for NHIF rates in Kenya should know that the old NHIF contribution table was superseded when the Social Health Authority (SHA) began administering the new health financing framework in October 2024. The former NHIF salary bands and KSh 500 voluntary amount should not be used to calculate current payments.

How are SHA contributions determined?

SHA’s Social Health Insurance Fund uses contribution rules under the current legislation and regulations. Salaried households are generally assessed through an income-based contribution mechanism, while households without salaried income follow the applicable household assessment. Contribution requirements, minimums and enforcement can be affected by legal or policy changes, so check the latest assessment in the official portal instead of assuming a historic fixed amount.

Employer remittances

Employers can manage declarations and remittances through the official SHA employer portal. The portal states that employers are responsible for timely, accurate remittances and that penalties can apply. See the SHA employer terms.

How to see your contribution

  1. Visit the official SHA website.
  2. Access the approved member registration or account service.
  3. Review household and employment details required for your assessment.
  4. Confirm the contribution displayed and the current authorised payment method.
  5. Retain payment receipts and check your account balance.

Why the old NHIF table is outdated

The 2015 NHIF schedule quoted monthly premiums from KSh 150 to KSh 1,700, plus a separate self-employed amount. These are historical NHIF figures, not a current SHA rate guide.
