Peter Munya, whose full name is Peter Gatirau Munya, is a Kenyan politician, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture Kenya. On 14th January 2020, Peter took over the ministry and this’s after Munya was transferred from the Ministry of Trade and Industrialization. Peter also served in the same capacity in ministry of East African Community (EAC) and Northern Corridor Development. He was the first Governor of Meru County and also thad second Chairman of the Council of Governors. He was appointment as a Cabinet Secretary the PNU (Party of National Unity) Leader. Peter also served as the 2nd MP for Tigania East Constituency, Meru County.

Family
He is the son to Jackson Munya M’Rukunga and Grace Mwakithi. Peter was born and raised in Muthaara in Meru County.
Education
Peter attended Chogoria Boys High School for his childhood education and went to Meru School for his A levels. He was enrolled for a bachelor’s Degree in Laws at the University of Nairobi. In 1993, he graduated from University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Laws Degree and managed to get a 2nd class honors lower division.
Munya took up an internship at Kamau Kuria and Kiraitu Advocates, after which he went to the University of Brussels, Belgium on a Belgian Embassy scholarship in January 1995. There, Munya got a master’s degree in International law (International Economic Integration Law). Peter then went to the University of Georgia where he earned his 2nd master’s degree in Law (Public International Law).
Career
He started his politics career in 2003 when he became the MP of Tigania East Constituency. Munya remained in office in the same position for 10 years, that’s until 2013. From October, 2006 to December, 2007, Munya also became the Assistant Minister of Internal Security and Provincial Administration and the Assistant Minister of East Africa Community from April, 2008 to March, 2013. On March 27th, 2013, he was elected as the first Governor of Meru county where served till 18th August 2017.
From 16th February 2008 to 13th July 2018, he worked as the Cabinet Secretary, East African Community and Northern Corridor Development Kenya, after which he was elected as the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, till on 14th January, 2020. He then assumed office as the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture on January 14th, 2020.
