Uchumi Supermarkets Kenya: Open Branches and Former Locations

Uchumi Supermarkets is a Kenyan retail company founded in 1975. After a period of severe financial difficulty and the closure of many outlets, the retailer has pursued a restructuring and partial return to trading. Its extensive historic branch lists should not be mistaken for a current network.

Which Uchumi branches have reopened?

In January 2026, Kenyan media reported that Uchumi had relaunched two Nairobi outlets: Unicity Mall along Thika Road near Kenyatta University and Lang’ata Hyper along Lang’ata Road. The Lang’ata location operates as a mixed-use property as well as a retail site. The company’s official website also identifies Lang’ata as operational and lists other sites; store-specific availability should be verified before travelling.

Additional locations shown by Uchumi

Uchumi’s own website lists locations including Nairobi West and Adams Arcade in addition to Lang’ata. Such website listings may not independently establish that full supermarket services are available at each site on a particular day. Confirm store hours and the services offered before visiting.

How Uchumi’s financial difficulties affected branches

Uchumi previously operated supermarkets across major Kenyan towns, but numerous branches closed during its financial crisis. The company has pursued a court-supervised Company Voluntary Arrangement to restructure debts. In August 2026, Kenya’s Parliament reported discussions on outstanding dues to former employees and creditors.

Where to confirm branch information

Use the company’s official Uchumi website and its branch information or current customer contacts. For outlets inside shopping centres, confirm with the specific centre before travelling. Do not assume archived telephone numbers still connect to Uchumi.

Historical customer-care contacts

Former listings include customerservice@uchumi.com, marketing@uchumi.com and investors@uchumi.com. These are archival addresses and should be checked through official channels before use.
