William Kamket Kasait is a politician who is the Speaker of the Baringo county assembly. He was born in Silale village where his parents, who are herders, were on the move in search of pasture and water for their livestock. William Kamket’s parents used an incident when there was an eclipse of the sun to put his birthday to be in 1973.

Though he said that his ID card indicates he was born in 1973 but the date was arrived at following the eclipse event. Otherwise he was born between 1971 and 1973.

William Kamket’s family lived a poor nomadic life that was complicated by insecurity resulting from banditry in the area. He even had to go to three primary schools before doing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams because they had to shift from home frequently. He narrated that he was so determined to get education because he knew it would open up his future and lift him from the difficult life he had gone through in his childhood.

Education

In 1981 William Kamket started his primary education at Nginyang primary school,then Kostei primary school and later Chemolingot primary school where he did KCPE exam. He did his best and in 1989 went to Tenges High School where he KCSE exam in 1992. He earned a good grade and secured a place at Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) graduated with a diploma in journalism from 1994 to 1996.

In 1998, William Kamket got a job at Parliamentary Service Commission as Hansard Reporter where he worked till 2002 and enrolled at Makerere University, Kampala, to pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication and graduated in 2005.

William got his first job at Nation Media Group before he joining Parliament as a Hansard reporter but he resigned to study a degree in mass communication at Makerere university in Uganda where he graduated in 2005. On William Kamket’s return he briefly worked in parliament but the desire to uplift the lives of his Pokot community led him to vie for Member of Parliament for Baringo East seat on an ODM ticket in 2007 but lost to his fellow opponent.

After failing to win in 2007 general election, Mr. Kamket returned to try his luck in the Tiati parliamentary race in 2013. Once again, William Kamket’s plans fell through but he successfully convinced MCAs to elect him as speaker. William hails the advent of devolution pointing out that nothing in terms of development would be happening in his home county. William attributes all projects going on in Tiaty constituency on the county government and regrets that although the national government has massive resources it has done little to help in fighting insecurity, poverty, illiteracy and diseases in his Baringo County.

Kamket has faced hard times as the speaker. Kamket has had to fight to keep his job as MCAs many times sought to impeach him. William was also accused of being among leaders who incited violence in Baringo leading to the killing of more than 22 security officers some years back. Kamket was charged in court together with two MCAs over the killings though he was acquitted later on. All this hurdles were political and meant to kill his spirit and determination to be elected in Tiaty. The evil schemes of his rivals have however boomeranged on them. He has emerged stronger and more focused to win come next election.

The darkest moment in Mr. Kamket’s life was in 1983 when bandits killed nine of his relatives including two pregnant women in an attack on their home.
