Peter Ndegwa is a Kenyan businessman, accountant and corporate executive, who serves as the CEO at Safaricom, the largest telecommunications company in the countries of the East African Community, with approximately over 32 million subscribers in June 2019.

Safaricom’s CEO, before his current appointment, was the Managing Director for Continental Europe and Russia, at Diageo. Peter was responsible for Diageo’s spirits and beer business across over 50 countries in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Russia. The business comprises of six business units each with a General Manager(GM).

Education

Peter Ndegwa is an alumni of Starehe Boys High School, one of the top performing schools in Kenya. Peter studied a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Nairobi University before proceeding to the London Business School for his Masters in Business Administration. The CEO is also a certified public accountant (CPA) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).

Career

Ndegwa took key assignments in project management and corporate advisory at leading European and American banks and insurance companies, after completing his Masters in Business Administration. He was relocated to London, in 1996, and became a consultant at the global consulting firm PwC, under the talent development program of the firm. Peter was transitioned, three years later, from the accountancy practice to the consulting and corporate finance unit at PwC.

The Safaricom’s CEO, in 2002, was relocated to Kenya and worked in the financial service sector on corporate advisory assignments, including valuation, significant project leadership and management, strategic transaction advice and financial planning and management among others. Ndegwa joined East Africa Breweries limited (EABL) in 2004, a subsidiary of Diageo in Nairobi where he served as a sales director, chief financial officer, strategy director and executive director. Peter showed his innovative skills when he spearheaded the invention of senator Keg, an affordable beer brand. The senator Keg has become among the most successful Diageo beer brands, and was even featured in the Harvard Business Review. Ndegwa was also part of significant development agendas such as the acquisition of Serengeti Breweries Limited, a major Tanzanian subsidiary, and unwounding a complex shareholder with SAB Miller, currently ABI, in Kenya and Tanzania. He won a coveted most respected business award in East Africa for five consecutive years.

Peter was sent to Guinness Ghana plc where he worked, from 2011 to 2015, as the CEO and then later in Guinness Nigeria plc. He has been the managing director of Diageo Continental Europe and in this role, Peter Ndegwa has been overseeing business in over 50 countries in Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Middle East and North Africa.
